DISCOVER TORINO - Torino First Capital of Italy

DISCOVER TORINO - Torino First Capital of Italy In occasion of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Italy foundation, in 2011, a week-end in Torino to experience the first capital of Italy in 1861, where the best exhibitions, concerts and events will take place.

FRIDAY

Meeting with the guide, check-in hotel and welcome cocktail.
Guided tour to discover the elegance of Turin, from its Roman origins showned by the Roman Gates and the remains of the Roman Theatre, to the works of the famous royal architects: the Royal Palace, Palazzo Madama, and the Cavallerizza Reale. Savoy dinasty has had, through the centuries, a great importance to the historical and social growth of Italy, laying the foundations for the Italian Unification.

The tour continues at the highlights of the Unification process: Piazza Carignano, the beautiful Palace where Vittorio Emanuele II was born and where he was crowned the first King of Italy; Palazzo Carignano, which houses the Museo del Risorgimento and the headquarters of the Subalpino Parliament, the first parliament in Italy which has been untouched since 1861; Carignano theatre, where the musician Michele Novaro set in music, for the first time, the National Mameli Anthem, written in 1847; the restaurant Del Cambio that was an important meeting point for the most famous aristocrats and Subalpine politicians in the years around the Unification.
In the restaurant there is the table in which Cavour, the first Prime Minister of Italy, loved to stay.

In the late afternoon, feel a unique experience, the Turinese Aperitivo to taste different snacks, accompanied by the famous Vermouth, that was created in Turin in 1796 and became the official aperitif of the Royal Family.

Afterwards, at 9.00 PM, enjoy the “Underground Turin” tour, to discover the tunnels below the Citadel, where, during the 1706 siege, Vittorio Amedeo resisted against French people in a great victory for Turin. After the victory, Vittorio Amedeo became the first king of Savoy dynasty.
Back to the hotel and overnight.

SATURDAY

After breakfast, meeting with the guide for a tour of the Mole Antonelliana, the major landmark of the city. It is named for the architect who built it, Alessandro Antonelli, and was conceived as a Jewish synagogue: in 1848, Carlo Alberto issued the Albertine Statute and allowed freedom of religion.
The Mole, never used as a synagogue, now houses the National Museum of Cinema, the most important one of the world, and the lift features crystal walls, allowing visitors to have a unique view of this marvellous building. From the balcony you have an unforgettable panorama of the city and its surrounding hills and mountains.
At the end of the visit, stop at Teatro Gobetti, where a tablet, put in 1930, remembers the first performance of the national Anthem.

Lunch at La Smarrita restaurant, located in Palazzo Salmatoris, the cradle of the Italian Unification. It was the private study of Camillo Benso Count of Cavour, the first Prime Minister of Italy.
The afternoon is free for shopping or attending an exhibition or relaxing at your leisure.
Free dinner.

In the evening, enjoy the “Magic Turin” tour: a guided “magical mistery tour” into the darker side of the city, through white magic and evil black-magic, among angels and devils, scary stone monstres and sinister architecture.
Back to the hotel and overnight.

SUNDAY

After breakfast, meeting with the guide and departure for Venaria Castle, one of the most enchanting Royal Palaces of the world, protected by UNESCO. It represents one of the most significant examples of the magnificence of architecture and art in the 17th and 18th centuries.
During the tour, stop at the Caffetteria for a coffee break.
As alternative, guided tour of Palazzo Reale, where the Royal Family resided from 1645 until the Italian Unification. The decorations and the marvellous interior furniture testify the passing of various artists that worked here from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
Back to the hotel, check out and free lunch.
